Describe Gotcha in a paragraph
Gotcha is a free real-life animal collecting game for iPhone and Android, made by independent developer Jurre de Ruiter. Players photograph real animals, birds and insects wherever they find them. The app cuts the animal out of the photo on the device, identifies the species with its scientific name, and files it in an index of 2,225 species graded from common to legendary. Since Gotcha 2.0, every animal a player catches also moves into a zoo they build and run, with habitats, paths, landmarks and visitors, eight leagues to climb and a seasonal Zoo Pass. Gotcha launched on June 19, 2026, is available in 44 languages, and has been used by 100,000+ collectors to catch 1,000,000+ animals.
What collectors catch most
Dogs, cats and houseflies are the animals Gotcha collectors catch most, followed by feral pigeons and chickens. The housefly is the most-caught wild animal of all. Legendary species are the hardest to find.
How it works
- Point the camera at any animal, bird or insect and take the photo.
- Gotcha cuts the animal out of the picture on the device.
- It identifies the species, with its scientific name, and grades its rarity.
- The cutout becomes a sticker in the player's index, filed under its number with the spot it was found.
- The animal moves into the player's zoo, where it draws visitors and earns coins.
